Keith Brooks
Keith Brooks’ career spans more than five decades of
dedication to accident and disease prevention.
His first job, after serving in World War
II, was with United States Steel Corporation. Dan Farrell was Corporation
Safety Supervisor, and Irving Pascal was Director of Safety at the Homestead
District Works which at that time employed approximately 13,000 steel
workers.
Under Irv Pascal’s supervision, Mr. Brooks participated in
the original U.S. Steel “Single Objective” and “Three C’s of Safety”
programs which resulted in spectacular improvements in both the frequency
and severity of injuries and diseases at Homestead Works.
In the fifties, he was corporate manager of employee
relations and safety for a synthetic fiber manufacturer when one of the
corporation’s plants established a world record for employee work hours
without a disabling injury. The plant received recognition from the National
Safety Council for its achievement.
In the sixties he installed a safety incentive program for
a major employer in the baking industry featuring merchandize awards to
employees for no injuries. He had learned the technique from Sharp Queener,
Supervisor of Safety for the Dupont Corporation. This safety incentive
program resulted in that company establishing the best record for injury
prevention in its history.
In the seventies, Mr. Brooks founded what is now known as
Brooks Laboratories. The new enterprise met with immediate success aided by
the fact that President Nixon signed into law the William Steiger Act, known
as OSHA, to be effective in January 1971. Mr. Brooks already had experience
with much in the body of standards incorporated in the Act, and employers
were eager to have his help to come into compliance.
In 1976, he married Dr. Margaret Brooks,
electro-analytical chemist, and she established a chemistry laboratory to
supplement the consulting business.
Early in Brooks Laboratories’ history, Mr. Brooks decided
to focus the company’s efforts in personal protection consulting, and wrote
the company’s mission statement which remains in effect today to “Protect
People in their Environments” .
Mr. Brooks still serves the company as Secretary and
Chairman of the Board of Directors.
